Co-occurring Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug Disorders
This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.
Co-occurring mental health and alcohol and other drug issues are the norm rather than the exception. Often clients living with these issues also experience numerous other challenges that compound the effects of the disorders and intensify the impacts on their lives. How do you provide services and supports that are responsive to the diversity and magnitude of clients needs? What knowledge and techniques can you use to implement quality service delivery? What is a brief intervention? And how and when can you effectively use brief interventions to assist clients?
This interactive workshop will incorporate a blend of theoretical and practical elements. We will look at communication skills, counselling practices and processes, stages of change, evidence-based practice and brief interventions. Approaches to client work will be holistic, person-centred and strengths based and support individual’s rights to choice and self-determination.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
* Identify consumers who may may be experiencing co-occurring mental health and AOD disorders
* Assess the impact and nature of co-occurring disorders and support needs of clients
* Identify and practice a range of skills and strategies including communication, crisis intervention, motivational, brief intervention and risk minimisation skills
* Describe the stages of behaviour change model and worker practices that are effective in each stage
* Reflect on own practice and seek appropriate supervision and support
