Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is a widely utilised therapeutic approach with strong evidence for its treatment effectiveness in a range of commonly seen clinical problems such as anxiety and depression.
This workshop will introduce you to theoretical concepts underlying the CBT approach and basic techniques and intervention strategies, providing useful knowledge and skills which can be applied in a range of casework and mental health contexts.
You will explore how common unhelpful thought patterns, emotions and behaviours can develop and maintain certain problems and difficulties. You will also be introduced to a range of cognitively-focussed and behaviourally-focussed treatment interventions commonly used in CBT. You will have the opportunity to practice these basic and intervention skills to assist others to understand themselves, and use this understanding to help them make significant changes around the difficulties they are encountering.
This workshop will provide the opportunity to:
- Learn basic CBT theory and principles
- Assess clients' suitability for CBT
- Review the evidence base for CBT and problems and issues for which CBT can be appropriate and helpful
- Learn and practice some basic cognitive and behavioural interventions including: psycho-education, thought monitoring, identifying and challenging automatic thoughts, identifying core beliefs, activity scheduling, exposure techniques, behavioural experiments and relapse prevention
Who should attend?
Workers providing casework and support services, who have minimal experience in CBT approaches.
